Watch out for the Congestion Charge in London

Several years ago London instituted a congestion charge in central London for all cars that enter the congestion charge zone. If a car enters the congestion charge zone it has to pay a toll of £10 during the week during daylight hours (weekends and holidays there is no charge).

It’s supposed to reduce traffic in Central London. As tourists we haven’t really noticed much of a difference in traffic and it really seems like more of a cash grab for the London government.

That said, even if you’re renting a car you are still responsible for paying the charge. If you don’t – you could end up with the charge on your car rental bill with some added penalties from the car rental company (especially if you don’t do it on time).

So, if you drive your rental into London – go online and pay your charge right away. We’ve heard horror stories of travelers who got huge bills from their rental company for forgetting (or just not knowing).
