How to Eat Lunch in London and Britain on the Cheap

Food is often one of the most under budgeted parts of a trip. You can easily go broke while on vacation if you do not have a clearly defined meal plan in place. It is very possible to eat on the cheap while on vacation and in most cases you will actually eat better. Here are a few tips that I have learned over the years to eat lunch inexpensively.

Ready meals

Many of the top supermarkets in the UK have pre-made food that is a picnic taker’s paradise. It is super easy to find pre-made sandwiches and salads to go. The best part of this method is that you can eat exactly what you would like and you don’t have to pay a small fortune like you would at a sit down restaurant.

Have a Snack

If you had a hefty breakfast and plan on having a large dinner, then perhaps a full lunch really isn’t necessary. You could opt for a snack instead, something healthy and nutritious to tide you over until dinner time.

Don’t Eat at Attractions

This is a biggie! Most attractions in England have some sort of cafe attached, from St. Pauls to The Tower of London, food is expensive here. I have often not found it to be very tasty either. While this is not a great place to get a meal, it is a great place to get a cup of tea and a small snack to tide you over.

Go Local Grub

This is one of my personal favorite tips. Try a fish and chip shop. The food is really tasty and inexpensive, plus you are tasting some of the local culture.

Shop at the Markets

London has tons of open air markets where you can buy anything from fresh produce to street food. Any good guide book will have a listing of the markets and when and where they are. Not only can you eat cheaply here but you get to experience some culture too!

Eat at the Pub

This tip can be hit or miss. Usually the touristy pubs are pricey but look for a place where there are a lot of locals. The prices can be reasonable and this is an especially good option if you do want to sit down for lunch somewhere. Be sure to check the menu before going in, most Pubs have a menu outside of the front door.

Fast Food

If you are really in a pinch and just need to fill up to keep going, or you want a taste of home, I recommend fast food. You can find most of the American fast food chains in the UK. They are just as tasty if not tastier there. However, try not to eat fast food everyday, there are so many other options, which allow you to taste the local culture.

With a good plan in place, there is no reason why you can’t eat like a King or Queen while you are on vacation. Knowing your options and budgeting for food will help you stay well nourished and ensure you have good cash flow.Don’t be afraid to try new things, you are after all on vacation to experience something new.
