Budget Tips: Don’t Convert to Dollars at Checkout

A new ‘feature’ in a lot of stores these days is that when they swipe your American (or foreign) credit card, they’ll offer to convert you purchase to dollars on the spot rather than pay in British pounds.

You would think that this would be a better deal for you if you can get the lowest exchange rate.

But alas, companies just operate on you thinking that. You won’t get a good exchange rate and the premium you pay just lines the pockets of the store.

So, when a check out person asks you if you want to convert to dollars, politely decline and have the transaction run in British pounds. In the end, you’ll get a better deal. Or if you want an even better deal, just pay cash.
