Those who prefer having down-to-earth basics, such as a comfortable bed and en-suite bathroom, will likely appreciate the following nine suggestions to turn their average basic stay into a luxurious one, requiring minimal effort.

Bathing:

  1. Towels

By all means book that cost-effective self-catering unit, but don’t forget to take along a big, fluffy towel. It will make you look forward to unwinding each night, and if you’ve spent a bit too long in the sun, it is less likely to irritate your skin, when compared to just any old towel you grabbed before heading out the door.

  1. Bubble bath or bath salts

If you’re on an active holiday, your body will appreciate the soothing effect of salts or bubbles added into your bath water. After a full day of climbing, swimming, walking and exploring, a soak in a refreshing tub will make you appreciate the day’s adventure all the more.

  1. Candles

Unless your room has a dimmer switch, candles will help you add an ambiance to the bathroom environment, and facilitate in helping you relax before bed. Even a tiny room with peeling paint will benefit from a soft candlelit glow – everything always looks slightly more attractive.

Food:

  1. Chocolate

Chocolate is a joy for many – it can lift your mood and is an indulgence you can afford to make on holidays. Buy a bag of small, individually wrapped chocolates (like the luxurious Ferrero Rocher or Lindt Balls) and pop one onto your pillow each evening to enjoy before bed, just like in a fancy hotel.

  1. Strawberries and cream

If you are not a chocolate lover, consider ending your day with a decadent dessert of strawberries and cream. Strawberries are known for keeping your pearly whites well white, and the cream you can put down to being a good dose of calcium. Any way you look at it, this is the perfect luxury with benefits.

  1. Alcohol of your choice

Many places have an on-site liquor license, but most guests find that their bar bill can quickly add up to become a pricy affair. Skip the on-site option and just bring along a small bottle of alcohol – be it a miniature champagne bottle you can share with your partner in the bath, a tot of brandy you can mix with soda and imbibe with your supper or a DIY cocktail after dessert.

Bed:

  1. Comforter or throw

It may be the middle of summer, but you’re still liable to get a bit chilly after you’ve drifted off, and awake at some point in the night to try and get under the duvet. Skip that inconvenient step, and bring a lightweight comforter or throw that will shelter your body from any breezes, and won’t leave you waking up a ball of sweat.

  1. Pyjamas and robe

Those who’ll be on their own should bring along their comfiest pyjamas – even if the PJs in question consist of holy sweatpants and a t-shirt – as the main aim is to be as comfortable as possible. You can also bring along a robe to pull on after your bath, or if you’re just lounging around the room. It’s also handy to pull over your PJs if you get unexpected company.

  1. Laptop with movies or series

If you’ll be heading to an area with temperamental weather, don’t take the chance you could be holed up in your basic room with no entertainment. Plan ahead, and preload your laptop with movies and series you’ve yet to finish. That way, if the unthinkable happens, you’ll be sitting pretty with a variety of choices.
